Frogs and Toads of Slovenia

Recordings by: Dr Tomi Trilar

Year of publication: 2003

Platform: Audio CD, Stereo

Playing time: 61 minutes 50 seconds

This audio CD from the Slovenian Museum of Natural History presents 42 exceptional quality recordings of the sounds of 13 frog species, one insect, and two birds. It contains a 16-page booklet with explanatory notes. The drawings in the booklet are by Paul Veenvliet.

Slovenia is home to 19 amphibian species. Six of them are salamanders (order Urodela) including Proteus anguinus, Salamandra salamandra, Salamandra atra, Triturus vulgaris, Triturus carnifex and Triturus alpestris. The other 13 species are frogs and toads (order Anura) including Bombina variegata, Bombina bombina, Pelobates fuscus, Bufo bufo, Bufo viridis, Hyla arborea, Rana temporaria, Rana arvalis , Rana dalmatina, Rana latastei, Rana (Pelophylax) ridibunda, Rana (Pelophylax) kl. esculenta and Rana (Pelophylax) lessonae. In Slovenia all of these species are protected by law.

Only the anurans vocalize and each of the 13 species are represented on this CD. Recordings were obtained in Slovenia using Sony TCD-D3 and TCD-D10 Pro II digital tape recorders and Telinga Pro 3 M and Pro 5 S microphones except for underwater calls which were obtained by using a DP100 DolphinEar Hydrophone System (Aretec, UK). Vocalizations were processed with ProTools 5 software using a Macintosh G4 computer. Only slight modifications to the original calls were made during processing in order to filter out low frequency, intrusive background noise. Filtering did not interfere with the normal frequency range of the calls.

Recordings were selected from among those in the Wildlife Sound Library of the Natural Audio and Visual Documentation Center of Slovenia (NAVIS) maintained by the Slovenian Museum of Natural History.
